Melissa Olive, PhD, BCBA, discusses the use of augmentative or alternative communication for autistic children who are non-speaking or minimally verbal. She differentiates language and communication and outlines different communication modes such as verbal and symbol. The speaker presents a case study and research on the impact of AAC in verbal skill development and explains picture exchange communication systems. She considers how to train children and support staff/family on AAC devices and how to use the Proloquo2go app (on iPhone) for communication and language building.
