Nutrition and dietary factors play an important role in disorders of gut-brain interaction and may contribute to symptoms in individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism spectrum disorder. Clinical care often involves multiple professionals and requires careful interpretation of dietary patterns, nutritional status, and emerging research. Variability in clinician familiarity with nutrition assessment and the scope of dietetics practice can limit effective integration into care planning. This CME/CE activity reviews core principles of nutrition and dietetics, components of structured nutritional assessment, and evidence related to dietary patterns and inflammation. The activity is designed to support interdisciplinary collaboration and evidence-informed clinical decision-making.

Kelly Barnhill, MBA, CN, CCN

Kelly Barnhill, MBA, CN, CCN, is the Director of the Nutrition Clinic at The Johnson Center for Child Health and Development. She is a Certified Clinical Nutritionist, with over a decade of experience working with nutrition in children with autism and related disorders. At the Johnson Center, she directs a team of dieticians and nutritionists that has served over 3000 children through this practice. Ms. Barnhill also serves as Chair of ARI’s Board of Directors

Stephen M. Edelson, PhD

Dr. Stephen M. Edelson has conducted research in various areas comprising behavior, biomedical, diagnosis, sensory issues, and cognition. He has spent decades spearheading research design by developing effective measures of autistic traits relevant to evaluating level of disability and establishing a network with researchers. He frequently convenes with this network to discuss emerging findings that have the potential to improve the health and well-being of people with autism. Dr. Edelson has published research articles with many notables in the autism field, including Drs. Bernard Rimland, Ivar Lovaas, Temple Grandin, Margaret Bauman, Edward (Ted) Carr, and Manuel Casanova.

Dr. Edelson is a participant on the Panel of Professional Advisors for the Autism Society of America (ASA). He is also a former ASA Board member and a past president of the Autism Society of Oregon. Dr. Edelson was named ASA’s ‘Volunteer of the Year’ in 2000.

Dr, Edelson served first as Executive Director and later as Chief Science Officer of the Autism Research Institute from 2006 to 2026. Throughout his tenure, Steve was deeply dedicated to ARI’s mission and to carrying forward its important work. He made meaningful contributions to the organization and built many relationships across our community.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Describe the roles and training pathways of nutrition and dietetics professionals involved in the care of individuals with disorders of gut-brain interaction.
Identify key components of a comprehensive nutrition and dietetic assessment.
Apply nutrition assessment findings to support interdisciplinary care planning and appropriate referral to dietetics professionals.
Evaluate emerging evidence related to dietary patterns, inflammation, and gut-brain interaction in autism spectrum disorder.
